Renaming slugs without breaking links
A slug is the part of a Klixey URL that identifies your store or a product:
- Your store:
klixey.com/your-slug - A product:
klixey.com/your-slug/course/your-product-slug
When you rename either one, every existing link that uses the old slug would normally break. Klixey prevents that automatically: whenever you change a slug, we keep the old slug working with a redirect to the new one.
How it works
You rename, and:
- The old URL keeps responding for about a year.
- Anyone clicking the old link is sent to the new URL.
- Search engines and social previews update on their own.
You don't have to do anything. The redirect is created the moment you save the change.
Try a new name without worrying
This means renaming is safe. You can refine your store slug or rename a product as your offering changes — old links from emails, social posts, and ads keep working.
The limit
There's a soft cap on how many old slugs Klixey will keep alive:
| Scope | Limit |
|---|---|
| Store slugs | Up to 5 old slugs per store |
| Product slugs | Up to 5 old slugs per product |
| How long each lasts | About 1 year from the rename |
If you rename your store slug 6 times, the oldest redirect drops off. Anyone using a link to that oldest slug then hits a 404. Same for products — 6 renames means the oldest old name stops redirecting.
Bouncing back and forth burns redirects
If you rename your slug from coaching to mentoring and back to coaching, that uses up redirects — Klixey doesn't merge them. Settle on a slug you can live with for a while.
Picking a slug you'll keep
A few suggestions to avoid using up your redirect budget:
- Pick a brandable, durable name — your business name, your first name, or a shortened brand.
- Avoid putting the year or a launch label in your slug (
coach-2026,summer-launch). - Avoid putting your plan tier or offer in the slug — these change.
- Lowercase, dashes between words, no special characters. Klixey enforces this anyway.
For product slugs the same rules apply. A product slug tied to a price (299-coaching) or season (black-friday-bundle) is more likely to need renaming later.
Reserved slugs
A handful of slugs are reserved — Klixey uses them itself and you can't claim them as a store URL. Examples: lifetime, admin, portal, api. The store-slug editor blocks reserved slugs as you type, so you'll know before you save.
What about custom domains?
If you've set up a custom domain (like shop.mybrand.com), your storefront lives there. Your platform store URL still works — visitors who type or click the platform URL are forwarded to your custom domain. Product slug redirects work identically on a custom domain.
