Creating a digital download

A Digital download is for anything you want a customer to receive once after they pay — a PDF guide, an audio file, a video tutorial, a music track, a design template, a spreadsheet, a zip of resources. Pay, get the file, done.

Quick answer

Create a product → pick Digital download. In the Settings tab, choose how you're delivering: upload a file to Klixey, or point at an external URL. Set a price, write the checkout and confirmation copy, then publish. Customers get a download link on the confirmation page and in their email.

What it's for

Use a Digital download when the customer's only job is to receive something — no enrollment, no community, no booking. Common examples:

  • A PDF ebook, workbook, or guide.
  • A music track or full album as a zip.
  • A video tutorial as a downloadable file.
  • A design pack (Figma file, Lightroom presets, an icon set).
  • A spreadsheet, template, or starter kit.
  • A Notion or Google Drive resource (delivered as a link rather than a file).

If you want to capture an email but charge nothing, you want a lead magnet instead — same delivery, no checkout.

The two delivery types

Open the product's editor, switch to the Settings tab, and pick one:

Delivery typeWhat the customer experiencesUse when
FileKlixey hosts the file. After purchase, the customer gets a secure download link on the confirmation page and in their email. They can re-download from their portal any time. You want Klixey to be the source of truth. Best for most files inside your storage limit.
External linkAfter purchase, Klixey shows a short "you're about to leave Klixey" screen, then sends the customer to the URL you set. You're delivering from Notion, Google Drive, Gumroad, or another host; or the file is too big to be worth uploading to Klixey.

You can switch between the two later — change your mind and the product picks up the new delivery from the next purchase forward. Existing customers' download links update too.

Setting up a file delivery

In the Settings tab, choose File and upload your file. Klixey uploads it directly from the browser, so even large files don't time out.

While the upload is running you'll see a progress bar. Once it finishes, you'll see the file name, size, and a remove button.

Replacing the file later

To replace it, just upload a new one. The old file is cleaned up automatically. Customers who already bought will get the new file the next time they download — there's nothing to send out.

This is handy when:

  • You spot a typo on page 14 of your PDF.
  • You release a new version of your template and want existing customers to get the update for free.
  • You're swapping a low-res preview for the full file.

Removing the file

The remove button clears the slot. Customers who already bought will see a "the seller has removed this file" message in their portal until you upload a replacement. Don't do this casually — if you just want to take the product off sale, flip the status to draft or unlisted instead.

Storage

Every file you upload counts toward your workspace storage limit. Larger plans get more storage. See storage limits for what each plan includes and storage usage for where to check what you're using.

Big files? Use an external link

If you're delivering a multi-gigabyte video pack or a long course, hosting it elsewhere (a video host, your own storage) and pointing at it with an external link is often cleaner than burning storage. Customers don't know the difference — they just get the link.

Setting up an external link delivery

Choose External link in the Settings tab and paste the URL where the file or page lives. That's it.

When a customer buys, Klixey shows them a short confirmation screen before redirecting:

"You're being sent to {your store name} on an external site. Click Continue to go there."

It exists for one reason: customers should know they're leaving Klixey. Notion, Google Drive, Dropbox, and your own site all look different from Klixey, and the warning means the change of context isn't a surprise.

You can change the URL any time. Previous customers will see the updated destination next time they click their download link, so this is also how you "move" the file without re-issuing anything.

Make sure the URL stays alive

External link delivery is only as reliable as the host you point at. If the Notion page goes private, the Drive folder is deleted, or the Dropbox link expires, customers can't get to their download — and Klixey can't tell. Check the link once in a while.

Checkout copy

The Setup tab has your checkout headline and description — the big heading and short paragraph customers see on the buy page. The defaults are usable, but tighten them so they sell the offer:

  • Headline: "Get the Calm Pricing workbook"
  • Description: "A 16-page PDF that walks you through a four-step pricing framework. Yours forever."

Both fields save themselves. See editing checkout and confirmation copy for the full walkthrough.

Confirmation copy

The Confirmation tab has the headline and message customers see right after they pay. This is where you tell them what's about to happen — "your download is ready below", "check your inbox", "log in to your account any time to grab it again".

A good default for files:

Your download is ready Click the download button below to grab your file. We've also emailed the link in case you want it later. You can re-download anytime from your account.

A good default for external links:

Off you go Click below and we'll send you to your downloads. Your link is also in your email if you want to come back later.

Keep it short. The customer already bought — they need direction, not a re-pitch. See checkout and confirmation copy for more tips.

Each download supports a banner image — the wide image at the top of the buy page. Upload it from the editor panel. The banner is purely visual; it doesn't change how the file is delivered.

Good banners show the product itself (a mockup of the PDF cover, a screenshot of the template, a still from the video) so the visitor knows what they're getting before they read a word.

Pricing

Set the price in the editor panel. Digital downloads support one-time pricing in any currency Klixey supports. See pricing your product for the full options and currencies for what's available.

For a free download, use a lead magnet instead — the checkout flow is different (no card needed).

Publishing

Like every product, a download has a status:

  • Draft — invisible to customers; you're still building.
  • Listed — on your storefront and reachable by link.
  • Unlisted — reachable by link but not on the storefront, for private offers.

Flip the status from the editor's status control or the Products page. See product status for what each means and how they affect existing customers.

Emails

When the purchase clears, the customer gets a Your download is ready email with the link. The link also lives in their portal under Account → Purchases, so they don't lose access if they archive the email.

You don't have to set this up — it's part of every digital download.

Roles

Anyone with the editor, admin, or owner role can create and edit a digital download. Viewer can look but not change anything. See roles and permissions for the full table.
