Custom domains

A custom domain replaces klixey.com/your-slug with your own URL — shop.yourbrand.com, store.yourbrand.com, or your apex domain yourbrand.com. This page covers adding a domain, what the verification states mean, what changes for your customers, and how to remove it.

Quick answer

Open Store → Custom domain. Enter your domain, copy the DNS record Klixey shows you into your registrar, then click Verify. Verification usually takes a few minutes. Once active, your storefront lives at your domain and visitors who hit the old klixey.com/your-slug URL are redirected to it automatically.

Adding a domain

1. Open Store in the sidebar, then Custom domain.
2. Type the domain you want to use (e.g. shop.yourbrand.com).
3. Klixey shows you the DNS record you need to add at your registrar — either a CNAME pointing at stores.klixey.com (for subdomains, recommended) or an A record pointing at the IP shown in your settings (for apex domains).
4. Add that record at your registrar, save it there, then come back to Klixey and click Verify.

Always copy values from your settings page, not from a guide

The CNAME target and A-record IP shown in your Custom domain page are the canonical values. If you're following a tutorial somewhere that lists a different IP or target, trust your settings page.

Verification states

Once you've added the DNS record and clicked Verify, Klixey works through four states:

State	What it means	What to do
Pending	We've accepted your domain and are looking for the DNS record.	Wait — usually 1–10 minutes.
Verified	We've found the record. We're issuing the SSL certificate.	Wait — usually under a minute.
Active	Your domain is live and serving your storefront.	You're done. Visit it.
Failed	We couldn't find a valid record after several attempts.	Double-check the record, then remove and re-add the domain.

A domain stuck in Pending or Verified is just waiting on DNS propagation or SSL issuance. If a domain reaches Failed, Klixey stops looking after 7 days — at that point, remove the domain from your settings and add it again once you've fixed the DNS record.

Brief DNS outages won't kill an active domain

If your DNS record temporarily stops pointing at Klixey while your domain is Active, Klixey gives you a grace window before reverting to Failed. Short blips at your registrar don't immediately take your store offline.

What customers see

Once your domain is Active:

• Your storefront URL becomes https://yourbrand.com/ (no /your-slug after it).
• Visitors who type or click the old klixey.com/your-slug URL get redirected to your custom domain automatically.
• Your customer portal lives at https://yourbrand.com/portal.
• Customer sessions on your custom domain are completely separate from sessions on the platform URL — a customer signed in at klixey.com/your-slug/portal would need to sign in again at yourbrand.com/portal. Most customers only see the custom domain, so this rarely matters in practice.

The pending state also has a visitor-facing surface: while your domain is being configured (i.e. the SSL certificate is still issuing), a visitor reaching the domain sees a polite "This domain is being configured" page with a link to your platform URL. They never see a broken page.

Removing a domain

To switch back to klixey.com/your-slug — or to swap one custom domain for another — open Custom domain and click Remove domain. You'll be asked to confirm. Once removed:

• Your domain stops resolving immediately. Visitors typing it in get a "domain not found" error from their browser.
• Your storefront reverts to klixey.com/your-slug.
• You can add a different domain right away if you like.

Removing a domain doesn't redirect old links

Klixey doesn't redirect visitors from your old custom domain to your platform URL — once the domain leaves Klixey, it stops responding completely. If your customers have your old domain bookmarked, point that domain somewhere yourself (a static redirect at the registrar) until they catch on.

Apex vs subdomain

You can use either a subdomain (shop.yourbrand.com) or your apex domain (yourbrand.com). Subdomains are easier and more reliable — your main website can keep living at the apex. Apex domains are doable but require an A record instead of a CNAME and don't play as nicely with some registrars.

Troubleshooting

Verification stuck at Pending for more than 15 minutes. Your DNS record probably isn't pointing where you think. Open the DNS recipes page and double-check your registrar's settings. If you used Cloudflare, make sure the orange-cloud proxy is OFF for that record.

Site loads but the browser shows "not secure." SSL is issued automatically once you reach Verified. Give it a couple of minutes. If it's still flagged after 10 minutes, contact [email protected].

"This domain is already in use." A domain can only be connected to one Klixey workspace at a time. Disconnect it from the other workspace first.
