Slug redirects (renaming your slugs without breaking links)
When you rename your store slug or a product slug, Klixey keeps the old URL working with a redirect to the new one. That means renaming is safe: the links in your bio, your emails, and your customers' bookmarks don't break.
Quick answer
Rename a slug freely — Klixey saves the old slug and redirects it to the new one for about a year. The cap is 5 old slugs per store and 5 per product. Past that, the oldest redirect drops off and links using it stop working.
How it works
You change your store slug from coaching to mentoring. Klixey automatically:
- Updates the canonical URL to the new slug.
- Saves the old slug as a redirect.
- Sends anyone who clicks the old URL to the new one.
You don't need to do anything — the redirect is created the moment you save the rename. Search engines, social previews, and email links all pick up the new URL on their own.
For the full conceptual picture see Renaming slugs without breaking links.
The limits
There's a cap on how many old slugs Klixey will keep alive at once:
| Scope | Limit | Expiry |
|---|---|---|
| Store slugs | 5 old slugs per store | 1 year per redirect |
| Product slugs | 5 old slugs per product | 1 year per redirect |
If you've already renamed your store slug 5 times and you rename it again, the oldest redirect drops off. Anyone still using a link to that oldest slug then sees a 404 page instead of being forwarded.
The same applies per product — each product carries its own count of up to 5 old slugs.
Bouncing back and forth burns redirects
Renaming from coaching → mentoring → coaching uses up two redirect slots — Klixey doesn't merge them. Pick a slug you can live with for a while.
What happens when a redirect runs out
When a redirect drops off (either you've used all 5 slots or the 1-year expiry kicked in), links to that old slug return a 404. Visitors see a generic "page not found" page.
The newer slugs you've used still work — only the oldest one expires.
| Situation | Visitor experience |
|---|---|
| Old slug still within the 5-redirect cap | Redirected to the current URL. |
| Old slug dropped off (cap exceeded) | 404 "page not found". |
| Old slug expired after 1 year | 404 "page not found". |
| Current slug | Loads normally. |
Picking a slug you'll keep
A few suggestions to avoid burning through your redirect budget:
- Pick a brandable, durable name — your business name, your first name, a shortened brand.
- Avoid putting the year in the slug (
coach-2026). - Avoid putting your plan tier or offer in the slug (
vip,summer-launch). - Use lowercase, dashes between words, no special characters. Klixey enforces this anyway.
The same applies to product slugs — a product slug tied to a price (299-coaching) or season (black-friday-bundle) is more likely to need renaming later.
Changing the slug itself
To change your store slug, see Storefront basics → Your store URL. To rename a product slug, open the product editor — the slug field sits next to the product name.
Reserved slugs
A short list of slugs are reserved by Klixey (like lifetime, admin, portal, api). The slug editor blocks them as you type, so you can't accidentally pick one.
Custom domains and slug redirects
Custom domains and slug redirects work together. If you have a custom domain set up, your storefront lives at yourbrand.com/ (no slug suffix), but Klixey still keeps your platform-URL slug redirects working in case someone uses the old klixey.com/your-slug URL. Product slug redirects work identically on a custom domain — old product URLs forward to the new one regardless of which URL the customer used.
