How checkout works

Every paid and free purchase on your storefront — course, community, appointment, event, membership, download, lead magnet — flows through the same checkout. Same form, same look, same access grant on success. This page explains what your buyer sees, so you know what they go through and can answer their questions.

Quick answer

Your customer lands on your branded checkout page, fills in name and email, enters their card (if paid), and clicks Pay. After a brief processing moment, they land on a confirmation page and an email arrives in their inbox. Free products skip the card form — everything else is identical.

What your buyer sees

Your checkout page is styled with your brand — your colors, your fonts, your logo, your headline. Above the form, your buyer sees:

  • The product's title, banner, and description.
  • The price, with any trial or recurring details spelled out.
  • A short form for full name and email address.
  • A card form (paid products only).
  • Your terms and a checkout button.

For products that offer multiple plans — say a course with monthly and yearly options — buyers also see a plan selector above the card form. The price summary updates when they switch.

You can customize the headline, description, banner, and the post-checkout confirmation copy for every product in its editor — see Storefront basics for how to find the editor.

Order bumps and discount codes

If you've set them up, two extra elements can appear at checkout:

  • Order bumps — add-on offers your buyer ticks to add to the order before paying.
  • A discount code field — where your buyer enters a code for money off.

Both apply to one-time paid purchases. See Order bumps and Discount codes.

The card form is built in

When a buyer is ready to pay, the card form sits inside your checkout page — no redirect to a separate site. They enter card number, expiry, CVC, and postcode if asked, then click Pay.

This matters for trust: the buyer never leaves your store's URL. If you've connected a custom domain, the whole experience happens on your domain.

The bank verification step

For some payments — usually European cards, higher-value purchases, or first-time use of a card — the buyer's bank asks for a second confirmation. They might see a push notification on their bank's app, a one-time code by text, or a fingerprint prompt.

It all happens inline on your checkout page. The buyer confirms, and the payment completes. Read more in bank verification — same page you can point a confused buyer at.

The "processing" moment

Right after the bank approves, your buyer sees a short Processing... message. This isn't a glitch — it's the few seconds Klixey takes to:

  • Create the customer record on your store.
  • Grant access (enrollment, community membership, download token, booking).
  • Trigger their confirmation email.

This usually takes a few seconds. Closing the tab during this moment doesn't lose the purchase — the email still goes out, and the access still gets granted. But staying on the page is the fastest path to the confirmation screen.

What success looks like

When processing finishes, your buyer lands on a confirmation page specific to what they bought:

Product typeWhat confirmation shows
CourseA button to open the course in their portal
CommunityA button to open the community
AppointmentBooking details and a calendar invite
EventSlot details and a calendar invite
MembershipThe list of everything they now have access to
Digital downloadThe download link, plus a copy by email
Lead magnetThe free download link

At the same time, an email lands in their inbox with the same access link. So even if they accidentally close the confirmation tab, the email gets them back in.

Confirmation copy (headline, description, what's-next text) is customizable per product — see the Confirmation tab in each product's editor.

Free vs paid — same pipeline

A free product uses the exact same checkout page, with one difference: the card form is hidden.

Same emails, same access grant, same confirmation page. The buyer's experience is identical apart from the missing card form. This means you can use the same product setup for paid and free variants — switch the price, the checkout adapts.

What happens when a payment fails

If a card declines, Klixey shows the buyer a plain-language reason — wrong card number, insufficient funds, the bank refused the charge — and offers two options:

  1. Try again with the same card.
  2. Use a different card.

Nothing has charged yet, and nothing is stuck on your side. The buyer can retry, swap cards, or come back later. Repeat failures are usually the bank blocking the charge for fraud reasons — the buyer needs to clear it with their bank. See payment failures for the full picture, including what happens later if a recurring renewal fails.

What happens if the buyer disappears mid-checkout

If a buyer closes the tab before paying, nothing has charged. There's no half-finished record on your side — they can come back to the product page and start fresh.

If they paid but closed the page before processing finished, the purchase still goes through. The confirmation email gets them their access link.
